Grand Teton National Park recently added 35 acres near the Granite Canyon entrance, marking the final chapter in a quarter-century effort to bring Resor family land near Teton Village into public hands. Since the first of these transactions began roughly 25 years ago, the family has transferred more than 200 acres to the park, protecting land with prime wildlife habitat and unobstructed views of the Teton Range. The most recent sale, finalized in late March for just under $11 million, was funded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which draws on royalties from offshore oil and gas leasing rather than taxpayer dollars.

On July 15, members of the Resor family joined park officials, Governor Mark Gordon, state lawmakers, county commissioners, and conservation advocates to celebrate the acquisition at an event hosted by the Conservation Fund, which brokered the sale. Speakers pointed to the parcel's location and topography as reasons the land could easily have been developed had the family chosen a different path, and framed the sale instead as a continuation of a century-long pattern of private landowners choosing to protect Jackson Hole's character — a tradition that traces back to John D. Rockefeller's early land purchases in the valley.

For anyone who loves this valley, it's a good reminder of how much of what makes Jackson Hole special exists because of deliberate choices, not chance. Land here doesn't stay wild by default; it stays wild because families, agencies, and conservation groups keep choosing to make it so. It's also a quiet example of why real estate in Teton County behaves the way it does — permanently protected land right next to developable land shapes value, view corridors, and scarcity in ways that ripple through the whole market for years to come.
